Selecting Your First Digital Piano

The piano is considered a foundational instrument which means that many students start their music lessons journey with piano lessons before moving on or adding other instruments. It is also an instrument that is often referred to when comparing pitches with other instruments including voices.

As per the Music Teachers National Association: “Piano and violin are the most common ‘starter’ instruments because the physical limitations of a child’s body will not allow them to play other instruments until they are older.”

Knowing how to play the piano will help you learn how to play other instruments and will also help you gain a better understanding of music theory, the language of music.

What kind of piano should I buy?

There are two different main types of pianos, acoustic and digital, and amongst the acoustic pianos, there are two types of those, upright and grand. This article will focus mainly on digital pianos.

Acoustic:

Mage Music Studio is a partner with Steinway & Sons, and we can help you shop for an acoustic piano.

Digital:

Mage’s Dream Digital Piano

  • If possible I would go for Yamaha because they feel the most like a Yamaha grand piano–makes sense since. Yamaha makes grand pianos, so their digital will feel pretty much just like the real thing!
  • I would love to get the Yamaha P225B for my lessons and indoor use since it is a step above the beginner style pianos and suits my needs for teaching and practicing!
  • For travel and performance use, I would go for the Casio CDP-S360 because it takes batteries and has the pitch wheel built into it which eliminates the need for a second keyboard or MIDI controller.
